Center Faculty Fellow Kamal Bawa Appears on BBC World News

As a part of continuing promotional efforts for his new book Himalaya: Mountains of Life, Center for Governance and Sustainability Faculty Fellow Kamal Bawa appeared on the BCC ?World News Program IMPACT on Wednesday, May 15th, 2013. Interviewed alongside co-author and photographer Sandesh Kadur, Dr. Bawa, the first recipient of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters? Gunnerus Sustainability Award?spoke to the environmental challenges facing the Himalayas, framed by the book?s stunning photography.

Bawa and Kadur spoke to the disproportionate environmental impact faced by Himalayas as a result of global climate change. Citing a rise in temperatures of three times the global average within the region, the authors expressed concern over the social and environmental impacts that will continue in the coming years. In particular Dr. Bawa noted the environmental awareness among local populations of the phenomenon of climate change, as evidenced in his recent study of over 500 households on the topic of perceptions of local climate. The authors further noted that man-made impacts on the region will exacerbate the loss of biodiversity, especially within fish stocks that local populations depend on for food.

The appearance on the BBC occured in parallel to a book launch event at the Grange St. Paul?s Hotel, London. The full apperance can be viewed on Youtube at this link.
