While there is hardly any doubt left that asbestos can have the potential side effects to people of any age, a recent report confirmed that there is large amount of asbestos-contaminated material found across NSW. It was further revealed after the investigation done by the Sun-Herald that more or less commercial contractors and home renovators are dumping the material across NSW, thereby putting the lives of people under risk.
Though there haven steps taken by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority in the last few years, there seems to be no potential impact of the same. In the past five years, the EPA had started 11 prosecutions against 7 defendants with $230,900 fines issued and another 450 hours of community service imposed. Even 16 charges of illegal dumping of asbestos are running in the Land and Environment Court.
The shocking revelation came after a video caught a trick carrying dumping the lethal material to dump at Moroota, north-West of Sydney, which made it clear that despite stern measures, such acts are being illegally performed. However, those behind the act were nabbed later and were heavily fined too.
It has been said so many times that even a minor trace of asbestos can mar life of thousands and thousands of people, thereby leaving them struggling with lung diseases like lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
?There are people who are not even born yet that will come down with asbestos-related diseases because of this?, said Barry Robson, President of the Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia. It is believed that the high price for the disposal is the reason that such ways are being adopted to dump the material.
If reports from the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute are to be referred to, there were as many as seven hundred Australians were diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2010/2011, thereby making it clear that there is no breather from the potential side effects of the construction material.
